FILM. Director Ang Lee Honored At Britannia Awards.

Variety’s Shalini Dore reports…

Jake Gyllenhaal, who presented Ang Lee with the John Schlesinger Britannia Award for Excellence in Directing, said he thinks frequently of his “Brokeback Mountain” co-star Heath Ledger and how far the LGBT world has come since that movie came out. After the big love scene in “Brokeback,” he said he turned to Lee who broke out into a big smile and said, “So gay.”

Lee, for his part, said he was so tired during the production of “Brokeback,” having such finished filming “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” and “Hulk.” “The shots in ‘Brokeback Mountain’ are so boring,” he said. His father had just died, but “that movie nurtured me.” Lee thanked his actors who were “tortured by my bad English and bad sense of humor.”

THEATRE. Tarell Alvin McCraney’s ‘The Brothers Size’ For Limited Engagement In SF.

For a limited engagement, playwright Tarell Alvin McCraney, director Darryl V. Jones and the Rhinoceros Theatre presents ‘The Brothers Size’.

Two brothers, the Louisiana bayou, and West African mythology swirl together in this treasured theatrical event that will leave you breathless. A hot-blooded, music-filled drama from one of the country’s most exciting queer African-American voices.

In the Louisiana bayou, big brother Ogun Size (Lakeidrick S. Wimberly) is hardworking and steady. Younger brother Oshoosi (Gabriel Christian),  is just out of prison and finding himself. The wily Elegba (Julian Green), Oshoosi’s old prison-mate, is a mysterious and seductive complication. A simple circle defines a world that begins in ritual and evolves into a tough and tender drama of what it means to be a brother by birth and to be a brother out of desire.

img_7782Flights of poetry, music, dance and West African mythology combine in a contemporary tale that explores the tenuousness of freedom and the need to belong somewhere, to something, to someone.

Go to Rhinoceros Theatre’s website for show times and tickets. Also listen to director Darryl V. Jones in an interview with BeBe Sweetbriar on ‘It’s Everything with BeBe Sweetbriar’ below. Enjoy!
