THEATRE. Tarell Alvin McCraney’s ‘The Brothers Size’ For Limited Engagement In SF.

img_7777

For a limited engagement, playwright Tarell Alvin McCraney, director Darryl V. Jones and the Rhinoceros Theatre presents ‘The Brothers Size’.

Two brothers, the Louisiana bayou, and West African mythology swirl together in this treasured theatrical event that will leave you breathless. A hot-blooded, music-filled drama from one of the country’s most exciting queer African-American voices.

In the Louisiana bayou, big brother Ogun Size (Lakeidrick S. Wimberly) is hardworking and steady. Younger brother Oshoosi (Gabriel Christian),  is just out of prison and finding himself. The wily Elegba (Julian Green), Oshoosi’s old prison-mate, is a mysterious and seductive complication. A simple circle defines a world that begins in ritual and evolves into a tough and tender drama of what it means to be a brother by birth and to be a brother out of desire.

img_7782Flights of poetry, music, dance and West African mythology combine in a contemporary tale that explores the tenuousness of freedom and the need to belong somewhere, to something, to someone.

FILM. Romantic Comedy ‘Front Cover’ Screening In SF.

Front CoverRyan is a handsome fashion stylist living in New York City who rejects his traditional Asian upbringing in favor of enjoying his life as openly gay. However that all changes when Ryan is assigned to style Ning, a famous Chinese actor, for an important photo shoot for his firm.

Despite a rocky start, an unlikely friendship develops between the two, leading Ryan to re-examine his roots and consider an enticing new path for his career. ‘Front Cover’ is a tender, entertaining look at clashing cultures and love.

In our very Black & White obsessed America, we tend to ignore that there are so many more cultures inhabiting and contributing to American culture. Also a large portion of Asian gay themed films tend focus on interracial white/Asian pairings, how Asian-Americans fit into the western world, or the struggle to find acceptance from conservative parents. The romantic comedy ‘Front Cover’ takes a refreshing and funny departure from these themes. From Strand Releasing, ‘Front Cover’ makes its San Francisco debut August 19-25. Watch the trailer below. Enjoy!

FILM. Watch Two Brothers Reconnect In Touching Doc ‘My Brother The Queen’.

“I just saw ‘My Brother the Queen’ and I LOVED EVERY SINGLE SECOND OF IT! I feel like I’ve known you for awhile now and in 5 minutes I have learned more about you than I ever knew. I didn’t realize how similar our stories were. And I wanted to say Thank You to you and your brother for sharing.” Was the post I left on my friend Antoine Thornton’s Facebook page.

Antoine, who is a regular San Francisco drag performer, performs under the name Pearl Teese. And it’s usually the dynamic Pearl Teese that is the star of the show. However, the reconnecting of two siblings, brothers Antoine and the film’s director filmmaker Joseph Thornton, is what takes center stage. The documentary short ‘My Brother the Queen’ tells the all too common tale of a family ripped apart after a family members coming out.

When my dad found out…he had my middle brother call me. He told him to tell me to take my MySpace down and to change my name. ~Antoine Thornton

In our increasing individualist culture were always being told that we have the luxury of creating our own families. Yet, this short doc inspires reaching out and reconnecting with those we may have a second chance of having a relationship with.

It’s a dysfunctional family, but when they try its beautiful. ~Antoine Thornton

Enjoy.

WATCH THAT. Bros Before Hos.

Bros-Before-Hoes

Being a Bay Area Head, last year I was more than excited when HBO announced the debut of the series Looking, filmed in my city; San Francisco. However, more than bored by the series, I’m trying not to get my hopes up too high for HBO’s Bros before Hos by creator Ben Cory Jones.

Bros, starring Dijon Talton, Kevin Phillips and Americo “Tuffy” Questell, centers on three African-American brothers — two straight and one gay — who are each dealing with love and dating.

I’ll definitely be tuning in when Bros premieres. Check out the Pilot Presentation for Bros and you be the judge. Will you be watching?
